I’ve started logging my miles on a spreadsheet.
The week of Feb 15-21, I totaled 41.9932 miles.
The week of Feb 22-28, I totaled 21.7777 miles, but 4.4138 of those miles were through gruesome amounts of snow, so I’m going to make an executive decision to count that as triple mileage, which puts me at 30.6053 miles.
I’m hoping to be at 70 miles a week for the last full week in March. My riding really does depend on the weather, though - my winter bike is starting to have some mechanical issues - so I’m going to need to come up with some contingency plan. Maybe I should get my trainer set up like I’ve been meaning to.

Status for the Tuesday-Sunday goal of 20 miles:
Tuesday: 2 x 2.2069 miles
Thursday: 14.1695 miles
Total: 18.5833 miles. I’ve got a little under 1.5 miles to go.
I may consider making a spreadsheet to monitor my training goals and progress.

While I am still a ways off from buying a dedicated rig, I am considering gearing down either my fixed gear or the small ring on my road bike. While I can hammer through the big rings as well as most, the big wall for my cycling is spinning. Obviously the hills and mountains of the west will require me to get over this problem, so perhaps that’s how I will deal with it in the meantime.
So, the plan for today, keep it on 38 up front, and in the 20’s out back for 20 miles along the Mississippi river road.
18.9961 miles + 2 (2.2069 miles) = 3.4099 more miles in 1 day than I was aiming for for the whole week.
New goal: 20 more miles for the week.

I don’t have a touring bike yet.
Here’s what I’m going to try. I’m going to set a goal for the week of X miles and keep improving on it. I’ll let my cruiser miles equal 1.5 times my road bike / single speed miles, though.
I’ll start modestly. Week of Feb 16: 20 miles.

A blog maintained by a couple of guys who are riding 8500 miles across two continents as a fundraiser to combat hunger. There’s some pretty good info here.
